Farmers without a FARM?

Putting it out there to see what comes : )

I am a stay at home mom with four children living in Western Massachusetts. My husband is a Therapist (LMFT, LMHC), working fee for service in a community-based mental health clinic- 45 minutes from home. He is in the process of starting his own practice- looking for office space closer to home and trying to get on insurance panels. We rent a tiny apartment in a large building on the third floor here in the pioneer valley. We have outgrown our space and are feeling overwhelmed with the lack of opportunities for a family of our size on our budget. I feel as if I am an imposter in my own life. I am ready to reclaim my path!

My husband and I are passionate about supporting our local economy, eating locally, and living sustainably. We would like to have our own farm with some space for gardening & fruit orchard, dairy goats, a spinner's flock of sheep, bees, chickens and ducks. I am learning to make cheeses, work with beeswax & honey (mmm), working on preserving foods (through fermentation, canning, freezing & drying/dehydrating) processing animal fibers (spinning, weaving, knitting, crocheting, felting, dying, sewing), learning the art of re-purposing/up-cycling old materials into new, how to live off the grid, and making milk-based soap (to name a few : )

I know many farmers/artisans who are interested in participating in or selling their goods at an artist's co-op--renting space on a potters wheel, studio space for a yoga class, a space for educational workshops, a storefront to sell their wares (bread, coffee, pottery, soaps, herbs/botanicals, fruits/veggies, dairy, handmades, antiques). This is my dream!

I am interested in starting a business from "home"! I come from farming roots and I believe in the strength of community. I feel like it HAS to happen- in my bones. We are incredibly motivated. I have been reading EVERYTHING I can get my hands on, going to work shops, looking at trends, keeping tabs on the local market (what's selling, where is there a need?, what's my niche?), talking with local farmers... for the past 6 years + BUT sadly we are no closer to acquiring property.

We want to buy a farm so that we can live an authentic life. I feel like this is my calling. I don't care if we only make enough money to simply pay the bills! I am not interested in becoming wealthy- I am interested in living a life of value. So, I am appealing to the blogging world at large because come hell or high water...IT'S TIME I GOT MY HANDS DIRTY! Is there anything out there that can help us accomplish our goals? I look forward to hearing from you!

a bit about us

Although we are nearly 3,000 miles apart, we are closer than most. We are approaching 13 years of close friendship that preceded marriage, college graduation, three moves in opposite directions and the birth of seven children. This is our story. Welcome to our blog!
